New Therapies, Better Lives
Preserving muscle, Enhancing metabolic health
Developing targeted approaches to maintain muscle mass and function during weight loss, ageing, and metabolic disease.
The Problem
The Gabriel lab at the University of Aberdeen is working on developing novel strategies to better understand and improve metabolic health, with a particular focus on preserving muscle function and physical resilience during weight loss, ageing, and metabolic disease.
Current approaches to weight loss and metabolic disease, including widely used GLP-1 therapies, can result in significant loss of skeletal muscle.
This loss reduces strength, physical function, and long-term metabolic health – potentially limiting the durability and overall benefit of treatment.
Despite rapid advances in obesity therapeutics, there are no targeted solutions to preserve muscle during or after weight loss, representing a major unmet clinical and commercial need.
Our Solution
SarcoNova is developing targeted interventions that preserve skeletal muscle mass and function during metabolic stress.
Our approach positions skeletal muscle as a central regulator of metabolic health – enabling patients to maintain:
- Strength
- Functional capacity
- Energy expenditure
Alongside improvements in body weight and glycaemic control.
Help shape the future of metabolic therapeutics
We are collecting insights on the impact of muscle loss in weight loss and metabolic disease, and the need for targeted solutions.
Your perspective will directly contribute to shaping future development in this area.
Why It Matters
Sustaining Treatment Outcomes
Preserving skeletal muscle is essential to maintaining the long-term effectiveness of weight loss and metabolic therapies.
Supporting Healthy Ageing
Protecting muscle function helps maintain strength, independence, and resilience in ageing and at-risk populations.
Reducing Functional Decline
Preventing muscle loss reduces the risk of physical decline and supports overall metabolic health.
